HAPPY INTERNATIONAL BACON DAY!
*celebrate good times, come on! It’s a celebration!* Can you think of anything more worthy of celebration than BACON? No. Nope. It’s one of nature’s miracle foods and there isn’t enough time or space on this blog for me to adequately express how much I love it.
Apparently, dogs love bacon too.
I can’t even blame them. *drools* Bacon is so good. The only problem? The poor, sad Casa de Kolchak dogs almost NEVER get bacon.
I know. I’ll give you a moment to digest that and, if I know you guys, locate some rotten fruit to throw it me as you tell me all the reasons Koly and Fe NEED bacon snacks.
The thing is? Bacon’s not the best treat for dogs. Yes, they love it, but it’s also pretty high in fat and you open yourself up to the possibility of things like pancreatitis. However, once a year, as a special treat, we make bacon treats and the boys go wild.
Do you want to make your dog bacon treats that are less risky?
Follow these simple tips to help your dog can experience the joy and wonder of bacon without the pancreatitis scare.
- If your dog has a history with pancreatitis or other problems, skip ’em. It’s not worth the risk. When in doubt, talk to your vet or nutritionist.
- Avoid recipes that use bacon fat to flavour the treats. There’s no need for it. Your dog will be just as happy with a treat that has a hint of real bacon and not all that unnecessary fat.
- For a healthier option, use a leaner bacon cut, such as back bacon or use turkey bacon.
- Choose a recipe that uses bacon as a flavour enhancer, not the whole flavour. A slice or two of bacon, split between a full recipe of treats is better than a whole pound of bacon.
- Serve your treats sparingly. Remember, a treat is a TREAT, not a meal. One cookieevery now and then is enough.
OK, are we cool? Let’s do this.

bacon carob brownies
(I know, again. What can I say, she’s got a lot of great stuff over there!) One of the most surprising dog treat recipe combos out there is bacon and carob. It sounds awful, but it’s actually really good and Kolchak will CUT YOU for one of these brownies. I like to make a really big batch, slice the leftovers into bite sized pieces and toss them in the dehydrator to create a crunchy treat.
