Philly Cheesesteak Crescent Braid Recipe

Contents show

My husband John is a huge fan of Cheese Steak. I am a huge fan of easy peasy dinners that go together super quickly. I have to say this recipe for Crescent Braided Cheese Steak was super quick and easy. There is a bit of prep with chopping onions and the green pepper but that is really it.

This would be perfect for a Super Bowl party or really any get together it also makes a great entree for dinner.

Ingredients

  • Frozen sandwich steak - I used Steak-Umm
  • Green bell pepper
  • Medium onion
  • Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls
  • Provolone Cheese

Equipment Needed

Baking Sheets - We are huge fans of these baking sheets that have sides. You don't have to worry; you are going to remove the crescent roll cheesesteak from the oven and have the slide right off.

Heat resistant potholders- A couple of years ago we had a fire scare when we didn't realize we had turned a burner on and a cloth potholder caught fire. Thankfully we walked by the kitchen and saw the smoke and were able to get it out ourselves. Since then we have only used these heat-resistant potholders.

Directions
1. Preheat oven
2. Prep green pepper and onion so they are ready to go
3. Cook steak strips in a skilletuntil no longer pink,Remove steak from skillet and place on the plate
4. Add bell peppers and onion to the skillet, cook about 5 minutes until crisp and tender, Return steak to skillet and mix together
5. Unroll 1 can of crescent dinner rolls onto a greasedCookie SheetCrescent Braided Cheese Steak Recipe - Tammilee Tips (4), press edges together to seal

6. Spread cheese along the base of the crescent rolls

Spoon heaping cups of steak mixture in the middle of the crescent rolls

7. Carefully cut 1-inch strips into the crescent rolls, fold the dough over the top of the steak mixture

8. Bake
9. Cut into slices to serve

FAQs

What condiment do you put on a Philly cheesesteak? ›

Cheesesteak lovers don't always put condiments on their sandwiches, but if they do it is likely to be ketchup. Other options that seem to be more common include sriracha or other types of hot sauce.

What's the best cheese for Philly cheesesteak? ›

It's generally topped with provolone cheese and/or Cheez Whiz. While the classic Philly cheesesteak is served on an Amoroso roll, that's a pretty hard find if you aren't in the Philly area (I know, what a bummer), but you can substitute it for a hoagie roll for an equally delicious sandwich.

What is a whiz wit? ›

One asks for “Whiz,” or “provolone,” or “American,” just like that. Next up: onions. For yes, the request is “wit.” For no, it's “widout.” (So, for Cheez Whiz with onions, it's a “Whiz wit.”) Additional toppings, if available, go by their regular names. Be forewarned: Lines are long, and patience is tested.

Is Philly cheesesteak cheese whiz or provolone? ›

In Philly, there seems to be two most popular cheeses to use which is either provolone or cheese whiz. The light flavor of provolone doesn't overpower the other ingredients while adding a nice cheese pull. The savory flavor from the cheese whiz makes it so that you don't even need to season the steak.

Does Philly cheesesteak have mayonnaise in it? ›

Crafted with premium steak, grilled onions, American cheese, mushrooms, bell peppers, provolone cheese, light mayo on our fresh-baked bread.

What's the difference between a cheesesteak and a Philly cheesesteak? ›

However, the main difference between the two is that a Philly cheesesteak is a specific type of cheesesteak that originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is made with thinly sliced ribeye steak, grilled onions, and melted cheese, typically served on a hoagie roll.

What is authentic Philly cheesesteak? ›

A traditional cheesesteak — one word (and no need for “Philly” or “sandwich”) — consists of sliced or chopped rib-eye beef, melted cheese and optional sautéed onions on a soft-but-crusty long roll.

What were the original Philly cheesesteak ingredients? ›

Although the original cheesesteak started with steak, onions, and provolone, we now consider provolone and Cheez Whiz sandwiches as classic cheesesteaks. Same with green peppers – some cheesesteak lovers can't live without them.

Do authentic Philly cheesesteaks use cheese whiz? ›

Easy Cheese is what is sold in the cans, and while some might say they are similar, nothing matches the liquid gold that is cheese whiz. The original Cheesesteak didn't even have cheese on it. It wasn't until several years later that cheese was added, and even then it wasn't even Cheese Whiz that topped the sandwiches.

How to order a Philly cheesesteak wit? ›

You say the cheese you want (prov, whiz or American, unless you are a monster) then say “wit” or “witout” to say if you want grilled onions and peppers in it as well. So a typical order might be “prov wit” (my usual order) to get a cheese steak with provolone cheese, grilled onions and peppers.

What kind of cheese whiz does Pat's use? ›

Kraft Cheez Whiz, white American cheese and provolone (which Pat's owners claim was the first cheese to be placed on one of their steak sandwiches) are the most popular cheese options, though we shouldn't forget about the time John Kerry provoked the ire of Philadelphians by ordering a cheesesteak with Swiss cheese.

Does Genos use Cheez Whiz? ›

This gaffe highlights how the cheese is one of the make or break factors of an authentic Philly cheesesteak. Geno's Steaks uses whiz, provolone, and American for its cheesesteaks, and a good way to tell an imposter sandwich is the addition of a cheese beyond those three choices.

Is Cheez Whiz real cheese? ›

As of 2016, Kraft describes Cheez Whiz as a "cheese dip" with the word cheese spelled correctly. According to a Kraft spokesman, the product does include cheese, but the company has chosen to list its parts—such as cheese culture and milk—instead of cheese as a component itself.

What kind of sauce is on a Philly steak and cheese pizza? ›

Cook the steaks on a very hot griddle pan, and after a couple of minutes turn them over and shave the cheese onto each steak. Warm the baguette in the oven. To serve, slice the baguette in half, pile on the fried onion, then the steaks, top with rocket and finally spoon on the mustard.
