Abstract

This chapter provides a history of Adventure Time’s production, covering seasons two to five. The chapter begins with a look at five storyboard artists who were brought on during the production of season two and who left an indelible imprint on the series: viz., Rebecca Sugar, Tom Herpich, Ako Castuera, Jesse Moynihan, and Somvilay Xayaphone. The production of seasons three and four—a period of explosive creative growth and rapid evolution—is then discussed. The chapter closes by outlining the production of the show’s fifth season; in this portion of the chapter, the failed attempt by the show’s production crew to produce a television movie is explored, as is the story of Pendleton Ward being succeeded by Adam Muto as showrunner.
