How to Raise a Doberman: Doberman Puppy 101: What to Expect Each Month [Expert Opinion] (2024)

Do you have a new Dorman puppy or are you thinking of getting a new doberman puppy? Well, here is what you can expect every single month until that puppy is one year old. Yep, we’re outlining it month by month so you know exactly what to expect and you’re only getting that right here on Dorman Plan Foreign. We’re going to start off at two months of age because this is roughly eight weeks old and this is the age that most owners bring home a new doberman puppy. Okay, so this first month is going to be really acclimating them to the new home is the first thing and that’s really important because you can expect some crying at night but anywhere between one day to two weeks of crying you’re gonna develop routines with your dog really do get some bonding going so they start to bond with you you’re going to adapt to them kind of as the month goes on Bond with you as well because you’re going to start heavy socialization super critical because you’re right now in the critical socialization window that lasts from four weeks of age to sixteen weeks of age so you need to get as much socialization as possible expose them to new places people sounds animals experiences as you can hopefully you’ll have your first vet checkup and you’ll kind of develop a care plan with the vet and start the vaccinations Advanced things like bed of where they go to their bed start to kind of introduce them to that ear posting is going to continue through this month and they should still be pretty much on four meals a day talk to your vet of course but most owners right now are still four meals evenly spaced throughout the day okay now you have a Dorman puppy who’s four months old congrats Posting is going to continue through the next four months.

Mark and you around here could generally reduce down to three meals a day evenly spaced throughout the month as well. Okay, month five, your puppy is now five months of age. This is a very trying month as well simply because a lot of owners here are kind of like getting at their wit’s end they’re like, “Is this ever going to get better?” You’re at it, you have a five-month-old puppy. Trust me, hang in there. You’re getting very, very close to a downhill slope.

Just keep doing what you know is right and stay consistent and stay calm. Continue the socialization here. Teething is going to continue through the fifth month of their life. They’re also going to be testing the boundaries, and they’re going to be testing even more; they might become more pushy and more demanding.

• “Puppy biting and nipping is almost over.
• You’re so close.

Just hang in there for this month.

• Um, please just stay strong.
• Interrupt it every chance you get.
• Don’t let them get used to it.

Don’t let them start developing the habit of mouthing on the hands or teeth on the body interrupt and redirect constantly. You might be able to stop posting your dog’s ears at around five months of age; a lot of owners are able to; however, it’s a really good idea to give an extra month to a six-month-old. Mark just to be safe, but of course talk to your vet; they have the final say.

If you want to do this, it’s really not a bad thing for a doberman, especially with the risk of bloat for these dogs, so if you want to do four, that’s great, but a lot of owners at this point do reduce to three, but five months of age is just toeing the line right here and just trust me it’ll get better and you’re very close to that once the teething stage ends here pretty quickly and you’ll see it gets a lot Celebrate today because the puppy biting and nipping should end pretty soon as well as long as you’ve been very consistent made sure that biting on the hands and all that stuff has remained a foreign thought to your dog because you interrupt them all the time it’s not their habit hopefully at six months. super good to do right now at six months of age, so if you haven’t enrolled them in obedience classes, this is a great time to do it. Your dog’s probably at anywhere between a half and three quarters of their adult height right now, so they should be grown pretty quick. Hormones are kicking in big time right now, and you’re really going to notice this for the males.

They’re going to start lifting their legs more in the six month marking things; they could get more defiant at times; and you may also see a little bit of a regression in potty training because they have those hormones kicking in; they feel the urge to Mark, but they don’t exactly know what to do. They might pee inside a little bit more. Because they’ Make sure they start going out and don’t let them get in the habit of marking inside the house, but don’t get frustrated with those small regressions that do happen sometimes; they’re going to be testing these boundaries also with you; those hormones are really putting that into overdrive. You also might notice their protective instincts.

That doberman protective instinct really kicks in around six months of age they might become more wary of strangers you might notice them as kind of becoming more in tune with you at this point barking might start to become an issue right now during this month as well that’s all very common for this age you probably are still at three meals per day again evenly spaced a meal for breakfast lunch and dinner okay next up and we’re clumping a few of these months t You should also see significant improvement with general behavior training leash training during this time not jumping on people when they come to the house that kind of thing just general general general behavior and being a good Steward is is of the door Marine is just really important right now you can introduce them to off leash training right now slowly and in safe environments during the 7 to 12 month period if they’re ready for that Mark but uh you know it’s different per dog and if you have any questions at all talk to your vet and most dogs are still on three meals per day evenly spaced throughout the day now this is a cool stretch it’s a long one seven to 12 months all clumped together but it’s a cool stretch because you’re starting to see things ease up as the owner and you’re starting to get motivated by that so that’s why this is a cool section okay You’ve done things very well, and you can start enjoying life a lot more with your dog.
