In winter, muskoxen conserve heat and energy by minimizing activity: They spend much of their time resting, sleeping and digesting their daily intake of low-quality plants. When arctic blizzards rage across the treeless land, they lie down with their back to the gale.

Musk Ox Adaptations. Behavioural: They move seasonally where it is the easiest to find foods. Muskoxen feed on grasses and also on seasonal wildflowers in the spring and summer months and spend in river valleys near to water.

Musk oxen are herd animals, and groups of two or three dozen animals are sometimes led by a single female. Herds use cooperation to deal with predation by wolves or dogs. When threatened, they “circle the wagons” and array themselves with their young in the middle and their sharp horns facing outward toward their foes.

Oxen are also cooperative and dependable animals that can continue to use their strength for long amounts of time. Some animals may try to run away when they're forced to do hard work for too long. However, oxen are loyal animals that'll stay around. Oxen are also hardworking animals that are even stronger than horses.

General description: The muskox is a stocky, long-haired animal with a slight shoulder hump and a very short tail. Both sexes have horns, but the horns of bulls are larger and heavier than those of cows. The horns of bulls develop large bases which nearly span the entire forehead.

Examples of behavioral adaptation include migration, hibernation, learned behavior, alteration in the mode of reproduction, altered feeding habits, and distinct modes of communication.

Musk Oxen have 2 layers of fur – the outer layer (called “guard hairs”) and the inner layer of shorter hairs called “qiviut” that fall out for the summer season. The under-layer can be used to spin a form of wool that is 8 times warmer than a sheep's wool – one of the warmest natural fibers in the world.

If a wolf pack surrounds the group, the muskoxen will form a tight circle, all facing outward, forming a phalanx of heads and horns.

Muskoxen are surprisingly tolerant of people and it's possible to get quite close to one, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. Always stay at least 150 feet from a muskox. As with any wild animal, don't approach a female with a calf. Even the normally docile muskox will fiercely protect their young.

They are hardworking people, who can work for a very long time compared to other people. Without being tired and without any complaint, the ox is independent; they need to have peaceful and quiet place to work. Even though they are not talkative, they are very reliable and supportive of the people around them.

Oxen are therefore usually of larger breeds, and are usually males because they are generally larger. Females can also be trained as oxen, but as well as being smaller, are often more valued for producing calves and milk. Bulls (intact males) are also used in many parts of the world, especially Asia and Africa.

Behaviour. Muskox live together in loosely organized herds of about 50 animals that may split or join up with others at all times of the year. When they are threatened or disturbed, Muskox bunch together in a tight ring facing outwards protecting the young in the centre, a unique defence formation.

Muskoxen are beautifully adapted to extreme arctic conditions. They live on open, unsheltered tundra, enduring shuddering gales, blowing snow and temperatures of –40 degrees or colder in the winter. One key to their hardiness is their extraordinary fur which consists of two layers.

The males battle for this dominant position through powerful head-to-head collisions. The defending male faces a line of challengers. One by one these challengers line up opposite the defender, lower their heads, and run full speed at him.
