Step 2: Staple and Cut Out the Blowfish Body

Once you have the blowfish craft template printed out, staple it to construction paper and cut out multiple shapes at a time.

So, did you know, you can staple together 10 pieces of copy paper and cut out 10 shapes at a time?! That’s mySECRETto fast & easy crafting. Stapling the paper is very important because it makes sure it doesn’t move as you cut. The more staples the better. Cardstock is the thickest so you may only be able to cut 3-5 sheets at a time.

Tip: While you’re cutting, if you’ve cut off all parts of the pages that have staples, make sure to re-staple the sheets that are left.Whenever you’re cutting multiple sheets at a time, make sure they are always stapled together!

Step 3: Cut Out the Eyes or Use Googly Eyes

I’ve included a template for the puffer fish’s eyes. You can always choose to use googly eyes or have the kids draw their own. If you want to use the template, here’s how:

Cutting out the puffer fish’s eyes is a little bit more difficult because you want to keep the printed outline for the craft. You will need to print or copy the eye page for as many as you need. Again, you can cut the template in half to save paper.

Staple the pages together and cut out multiple pieces at once. Just make sure you line the paper up perfectly before stapling. Hold them up to the light and rotate the paper until they all lined up. So line up all those eyeballs and get cutting!

When you’re finished cutting out all of the shapes. Each child should have:

  • Top shape
  • Bottom shape
  • 2 fins
  • 2 eyes

Step 4: How to Make the Puffer fish

The kids will just need to glue it all together and add those dots!

  1. Glue the two spiky semi-circles together on the straight edge to form a spiky circle ball.
  2. Glue the fins to the back of the circle face – the pointed, single end of the triangle should be glued to the back.
  3. Glue or draw on the eyes.
  4. Draw on a mouth.
  5. Add dots with window markers, paint daubers, stickers, or just draw them with markers.
  6. Don’t forget to write your name on the back.

We happened to have window markers at our house when we were making the fish and the white marker was PERFECT! You can of course use any maker or bingo daubers, even paint and q-tips. The dots can be any color. But if you’re interested, I would totally recommend getting the window markers just to have them. They are so much fun. We decorate our van windows every year for the kids’ birthdays and they love it!

And you’re finished!

It took me about 10 minutes to have the supplies for 20 kids. How amazing is that?! Now you’re ready to take your Puffer Fish craft to your event. This would be a great craft for an ocean lesson, preschool, girl scouts, boy scouts or just a fun school party idea.
