Have you ever wanted to have that classic steakhouse experience at home? The perfectly cooked steak is just one aspect (I can help you out with that here with this Flat Iron Steak Recipe). But you’ve also got to have the sides, sauces and toppings to go along with it.

I’m sharing one of the classics today to get you one step closer to making the perfect steakhouse meal all on your own: Sautéed Mushrooms and Onions.

They are savory and full of umami flavor. They are the perfect compliment to all kinds of meat dishes including grilled steaks, pork and burgers.

Perfectly Sautéed Mushrooms and Onions, take a little bit of time. That is because it takes time for the vegetables to get golden brown and caramelized. But other than that, they are easy peasy to make! Let me show you how.

Ingredients needed:

MUSHROOMS: Any button mushrooms will do! My favorite are crimini which are sometimes labeled baby bella in the grocery store. They have an earthy flavor I love but white mushrooms work as well!

ONION: Walla walla sweet or vidalia onions are perfection here because of their hint of sweetness that is even more enhanced by caramelization. In a pinch, yellow onion will work too.

DES’ TIP:Walla walla and Vidalia onions are often considerably bigger than yellow onions. Because of this, if you substitute yellow onions use 2 medium yellow onions for the 1 walla walla.

GARLIC: Because garlic makes everything better.

BUTTER: This will help give the vegetables their golden brown color.

EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL: Adding a touch of olive oil to the butter will help prevent the butter from burning.

WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE: Adds a deeper, more complex savory flavor to just about any dish.

UMAMI MUSHROOM POWDER: This is optional but I just found it recently and have been using it on everything. Umami is the a Japanese word that translates to “pleasant savory taste”. It is that rich savory taste that you get from foods like mushrooms, soy sauce and miso. This powder is actually made from mushrooms so it only enhances the mushroom flavor in this dish. I bought this on Amazon but you can also buy it at Trader Joe’s or make your own.

STEP #1: Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat until the butter melts. About 1 minute.

STEP #2: Add in mushrooms. Cook until mushrooms have released their liquid and start to brown. About 10 minutes.

STEP #3: Add sliced onions and Worcestershire. Cook until softened and caramelized. About 15 minutes.

STEP #4: Add in garlic, salt, pepper and umami powder if using. Cook just a couple minutes more or until garlic is fragrant.

These sautéed mushrooms and onions are fantastic on steak. But they are also great when added to burgers, on top of baked potatoes or as a savory side dish.

Storing and reheating leftovers:

If you’ve got any leftovers store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat simply place in a pan and cook on low until warmed through. You shouldn’t need to add anymore butter or oil.
