The Mankato Advocate says that their Commercial club has $2,500 on hand to be used this summer for the good of Mankato. Just how a com mercial club ever got $2,500 in their treasury is a secret that a lot of other towns would like to share. And yet just like week 75 of the business men of Colby met and formed a Commercial club by putting up $25 each, a total of $1,875.

Grafter in the Toils Many Downs people will remember one W. C. Conway, who was in Downs a year or two ago representing himself as the agent of the government and claiming that a government road was to be established in this locality, providing the various towns would put up the necessary funds to push the thing through. Conway was arrested in Omaha last week for forgery and passing worthless checks, and is now in jail there. It is also claimed that he served a jail sentence in Montana for some of his good roads schemes.

Conway was a smooth talker and put up a good spiel in a meeting at the library here, but the people did not fall for his line of talk. it now seems that they used good judgments in avoiding entanghing alliances with News. Conway visited Concorala something over a year ago and stated that he was a director of tours and that he was going to route so many cars over the White Way, through Concordia, that people living on the north side of the White Way would never have opportunity of crossing over and visiting their neighbors on the south side. And now the poor man is in trouble more serious that the "wheel in the head trouble" with which he was suffering when he visited this city. Nothing adds more to the cheerful appear ance of a home than good light.

Nancy Sylvina Rice bor Coshockton county, Ohio, April 28, 1843, and died at her home in this city Thursday, March 15, 1917. At the age or tour years sue with her parents to Illinois and they settled in Ogle county where grew into womanhood with her brothers and sisters. At the age of sixteen united with the Christian church and in the faith of that church she continued many years.

In the year of 1866 she was united in marriage to J. 1. Wright, December 31st. In September 1870, they moved to Kansas and 1871 they settled on their homestead in Cloud county where they lived and raised their family, four girls and two boys which have all married and settled around them. On account of failing health they left the farm and moved into Glasco in the fall of 1909 where they have since lived.

In studying the scriptures she became dissatisfied with some of their teachings of the Christian church and she united with the Church of God in the spring of 1881, because the Church of God teach that man is mortal and receives immortality only through Jesus Christ at the resurrection of the dead. See St. John 11, 25th verse, "And Jesus said unto her I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." When at the resurrection morn her faith and hope are raised on these promises, and the choice for the lesson to be read was First Corinthians, 15th chapter, the whole chapter. Grandma Wright, as she was widely known, has left many friends behind who will always remember her kind and loving disposition and who was always ready to help those who needed her. Her place can never be filled and the memory of her sweet face will always dwell in the hearts of the loved ones left behind.

LOYALTY DAY APRIL 6 Gov. Capper Sets Aside Day People of Kansas to Show Patriotion Their Counter. Kansas, whose citizens have been quietly and without hysteria, "setting their house in order" against the coming of war, will observe Friday April 6, as Loyalty Day. The proclamation naming the day was issued yesterday by Governor Capper. In his proclamation the governor asks that fa*gs be displayed on every home and business house in the state on that day; that patriotic exercises be held the schools; that public meetings be held in the cities and towns of the state; and messages of support and encouragement be sent to the president and congress.

The proclamation follows: Today despite a patience too prolonged the American nation is verging on war. What the immediate issue will be only God in His wisdom knows. The spirit of Kansas is stirred as it has not been stirred for a generation. Our peace-loving, sober-minded twicethinking people, without hysteria and without panic, are quietly "setting their house in order" that they be ready for whatever demands may be made upon them. The state burns with a patriotic fevor deep and genuine because it is founded upon a genuine love of country.

But that the world may know Kansas stands as ready now as ever to do her full duty, and more: I hereby designate Friday, April 6. 1917, as LOYALTY DAY" in Kansas, and call upon the Kansas people to observe that day with patrietic order, by a general display of the national colors; by suitable patriotic instruction and exercises in public and private schools; by public meetings in cities towns and villages; by pledges of support to the national government and- -that there may be no mistaking our patriotic determination to uphold the traditions of our country and the honor of our flag at home and abroad -by messages of encourgement to the President and our representatives at Washington. The quarrel into which we have been drawn is not of our seeking. We are actuated only by a desire to protect freedom and the rights of humanity, to defend an outraged national honor Let us approach the task with all the solemnity of a sacred rite. I further urge that beginning today, all public officers and the people generally give expression to their loyalty by a daily display of the flag upon their homes, their automobiles their public buildings and places of business; and that school exercises be opened daily by the singing of a patriotic song.

It is not to our credit as patriots that the average American is ignoran of the words of all the stanzas of "America," "The Star Spangled Banner," an Let the words of these songs be made a part of the education of our children that they may all their lives respond not only in spirit but by word and voice when called upon to sing them. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, have hereunto subscribed my name and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the State of Kansas. Done at Topeka this 26th day of March, A. 1917. ARTHUR CAPPER, Governor.

Attest: J. T. BOTKIN, Secretary of State. Presbyterian Reception The three ladies' societies of the Presbyterian church held a reception last evening at the church in honor of Rev. and Mrs.

James Aikin Smith and the new members who recently came into the church. About 200 members of the church and congregation assembled and a most enjoyable informal time was enjoyed. A splendid musical program was rendered as follows: Duet with Edison--Miss Mary Lefker and John Crider, Vocal solo- Mrs. F. E.

Milligan. Piano solo Mrs. W. E. Konantz.

Duet--Miss Mary Lefker and Clifford Kington. Vocal solo Will Scott. Edison music. At the close of the program in behalf of the gentlemen of the church, Mr. Marble presented Rev.

Smith with a gold watch as a token of respect and friendship with which they held him. Mr. Marble also extended a greeting to the new members. Mrs. John Mead, in behalf of the ladies of the church presented Mrs.

Smith with a sunburst pearl pin. Both. Mr. and Mrs. Smith responded in their charming style assuring their friends of their great appreciation of the tokens and how they will ever think with love of their Fort Scott friends.

After the program the guests were invited into the Sunday school room for refreshments. The room was attranctively decorated with potted plants and rugs and the long table from which the refreshments were served was decorated in ferns and candle sticks with green shades.Fort Scott Tribune.
